About Genetic Engineering

Man is made up of organs and these organs are made up of cells. The thing that drives with these cells is the genes. The genes control, instruct and help the cells in doing their function actively and effectively.

So if these genes are modified for a purpose, then one may expect many consequences from it. It may result in good consequences like high yielding varieties of crops, lower risks of getting into health defects and increased life expectancy.

The field of biology coupled with help of engineering, that is concerned with modifying these genes and regenerating an organism with desired characteristics is called as Genetic Engineering. Latest developments in this field have resulted in the well known, Genetically Modified Foods, Genetically Modified Organisms like sheep, goat etc. There is a thought that if anybody uses this Genetic Engineering technique in human gene structure, one may end up with the human having no health relates problems that occur due to organ failure or genes. This has opened up a new research field with a lot of scope. But some people consider it to be unethical and oppose it.

Genetic Engineering uses the high end techniques like recombinant DNA technology in cutting and splicing genetic sequences and modifying it to have desired characteristics. Simply it is the alteration of DNA sequences. This method of avoiding certain health problems using Genetic Engineering is called as gene therapy and is widely acclaimed to be unethical and is considered to have negative social impacts. So even though there is a lot of scope left on the subject, many do not attempt it. But still this is in its developing stage and has lot to offer.
