AntioxidantsMan and in fact all the living things in this earth undergoes a process of deterioration and degradation called as aging. There are lot of theories put behind the process of aging and a lot of controversy behind it.
But one of the most convincing and widely accepted theories that tell about aging is the oxidation theory. By this theory, aging occurs due to oxidation and involves elimination of a free radical. This free radical stimulates further oxidation. So, people began to think that if one could arrest this process of oxidation, then, one could well prevent oneself from aging. Some materials protect other substances from oxidation and these are called as antioxidants. So there is a theory that is put behind which tells that consuming antioxidants will help one from aging. The major thing that an antioxidant does is that it reacts with the free radical that is formed and does not allow its propagation. These has resulted only a very little success. These antioxidants can have several good effects. Furthermore it prevents from various diseases macular degeneration and other cardio vascular problems. Also they might help one from getting out of suppressed immunity that would have arisen due to malnutrition. Also it prevents neurological problems and as a whole slows down aging process. These are available in our normal food items such as carrots, red wine, pomegranate, watermelon and other fresh fruits. But one must be cautious in using the amount of antioxidants as the high usage will lead to negative effects. Hence some caution must be given in using these antioxidants.
